If you live more in the countryside as we do you probably know what it is to have deer strolling through your garden and eating your freshly planted vegetables and or flower beds

You spend a lot of time growing your garden and adding fertilizers like Dr. Earth and maybe even adding compost in the spring from Charlie’s compost to grow vegetables.

What every you have tried to deter deer I am sure, since I tried them too, that nothing works that great. The only thing is a fence around the part where you like to keep the deer away.

Best Height

While a height of 4 feet (1.20 meters) is sufficient for wild boars, it must be at least 5 feet (1.5 meters) for deer. Deer, on the other hand, are only kept reliably at the height of about 2.00 meters.

Although I have seen deer jump over fences that were about 6 feet high with no problem.

Now, that this has been clarified, you can decide which deer fence you want to set up because there are different wild fence types.

Type off fences

The classic post fence is the most common. Here, posts made of wood, plastic, or metal are placed in the ground and connected with a mesh offense. The rack gate, in which the individual fence elements are nailed together, is an attractive alternative.

If necessary, they can be added or repaired without great effort. So-called suspension cable fences are often used in alpine areas. Here, the fencing takes place with stable steel cables that are held in the ground by ground anchors.

Electric Fences

And finally, electric fences often serve as deer fences. They have the advantage over the other variants in that they offer protection in two ways. Not only do the electric fence and signal strips represent a visual obstacle, but the wild animals also receive a slight electric shock when touched, which is not harmful, but uncomfortable for them. Electricity is supplied either via a 12-volt electric fence device or a 230-volt electric fence power supply unit, if possible.

Wild Fences

So-called wild fences do not require a permit. Nevertheless, the provisions of the Forest Act, nature conservation law, and building law must be taken into account. These can vary from state to state. Here you should definitely inquire beforehand. If the legal requirements are met, the next question is what kind of game the fence should protect against, because depending on the species, different heights are required for the game fence.

If you have now decided on the type of fence you want to set up, you can begin with the preparations for the construction of the deer fence.

Materials and Prices

First of all, you have to determine the course of the fencing, because of the material requirements and thus the costs are calculated from this. Generally, a post spacing of three to four meters is recommended. Depending on the length of the fence, you will need a corresponding number of posts. In addition, there are wires and any other accessories that may be required.

These should be buried 60 to 80 centimeters deep in the ground and secured with struts, as the entire tensile load rests on them. Now you can begin to attach the knot mesh to the post with staples, whereby the start and end posts should be cramped twice as much as possible.

In the case of the intermediate posts, the staples should be set a little looser so that they can be tightened if necessary. If you initially decided on an electric fence, the power supply must, of course, still be ensured.
